Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Intro
The younger and healthier prostate normally sheds dead cells and regenerates new ones. As men age prostate cells die less often (lower cell turnover) and as a result the prostate can enlarge, squeezing the urethra and interfering with urination and sexual function. Men over the age of 50 are at greatest risk of getting BPH. When trying to explain where their pain is coming from it can be difficult to describe where it is because nerves that carry pain sensation from the prostate do not localize the source of pain.
S&S
Referral Pattern
Pain from BPH is referred to the low back, upper thigh and/or hip. It may also be referred to the suprapubic or pelvis. Patients may experience general lower abdominal discomfort.
Testing/Diagnosis
Digital rectal exam of the prostate
